Saidu Sharif Airport also known as Swat Airport is situated in Kanju, Swat, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan. The airport building and runway were originally built in 1978 but are recently renovated in 2021.
Although officially named Saidu Sharif airport, the airport terminal is approximately 4.1 Km (2.6 miles) away from Saidu Sharif the capital of Swat.

Saidu Sharif Airport at Swat has gone through a major refurbishment, extension, and up-gradation work and is planned to reopen in March 2021. With the extension, up-gradation, and uplift it is planned that Saidu Sharif Airport might be considered for operating international flights in near future.

Saidu Sharif Airport Domestic Flights

The airport access road is called “Airport Road” the road westbound leads to the upper and north areas of swat such as Matta, Malam Jabba, Kalam Valley, etc. The eastbound road of Swat Airport road leads to Kanju and Kabal and further to Mingora and Saidu Sharif across the Swat River.

I have landed and flown from this the saidu sharif airport in the past. It is nice, big, spacious, clean, clear signs for directions. The passenger waiting area is comfortable. The staff is helpful and there is plenty of secure parking space at the airport.
From 1990 till 1992 I used Saidu Sharif Airport very frequently. During this time I was flying back and forth using this airport between Swat Vally, Islamabad, Peshawar, and Chitral for business purposes. Back in the days, the Saidu Sharif airport runway was suitable only for small commercial aircrafts landing. The flight schedule from swat airport to Islamabad and Peshawar was on a daily basis while flight frequency to Chitral was once or twice a week.
I have been to a lot of small airports, and surprisingly I found the Saidu Sharif Airport the most efficient, clean, and passenger-friendly. The location of the swat airport is perfect for onwards road travel to any part of swat as it is situated right in the middle of the swat valley at Kanu village.
The staff at this airport is friendly and every time I was impressed by the speed in which we went through security as they have separate little booths were you can pick up your tray with your bags. On landing, however, you had to wait for the airport staff to unload the baggage. I have heard that with recent refurbishment in 2020, the Saidu Sharif Airport has been upgraded to international standard facilities.
A very efficient clean and user friendly airport. I use the airport a few times a year for flights between swat and Islamabad. The connection to the public transportation to the airport is good only if you consider hiring private taxies. The location of the airport is best because it is literally less than 30 minutes drive from Mingora and Saidu Sharif.
